For Alexander Technique in general
"I find the Alexander Technique very helpful in my work. This happens without you trying. They get you to be light and relaxed. You must get a teacher to show it to you."(John Cleese, actor)
"97% of people with back pain could benefit by learning the Alexander Technique-it is only a very small minority of back pain sufferers that require medical intervention such as surgery."(Jack Stern, neurosurgeon)
"The Alexander Technique works.....I recommend it to anyone who has neck pains or back pain."(Roald Dahl, writer)
For Duncan Carmichael
"Duncan is supportive, friendly and very good! His directions are clear and precise and he makes it easy to understand the underlying concepts beneath the instructions. The stiffness in my shoulder has gone, and in general I feel more relaxed and have more energy than I have had for a long time." (Jo Verrent, client)
"The first two sessions were great -making me aware bit by bit of how to move differently, but it was the third session when the magic really began to happen. That's because, having first recognised Duncan's professional expertise, and second learned to trust his deep, compassionate human-ness, on the third I was able to let go of my inbred "control freakery". I am lighter, brighter, full of spontaneous laughter, and my spine is flexing in ways it never knew possible. I call you a magician, not lightly, but with lightness. Thank you!" (Kay Bottomley, Client)
I had the great good fortune of crossing paths with Duncan whilst traveling in Mexico. While his calm demeanor seemed approachable from the start, what emerged was his ability to see where his healing techniques would be useful in a very non-threatening manner.
I was suffering from Lumbar compaction to the point where pinched nerves were impacting my ability to walk comfortably; debilitating for a person used to being active and athletic.
With time for just a single session together, Duncan thoughtfully imparted just the right amount of tools for me to find some relief. His deft manipulation of my neck, shoulders and arms miraculously calmed the turmoil in my lower back!
My journey now is to find a person in my corner of the world with whom I can continue this form of treatment.

This spring I treated myself to a weeklong Alexander Technique retreat in Sheildaig in the Scottish Highlands with teacher Duncan Carmichael. My goal was to learn more about using my body efficiently and experience the beauty of the Highlands. His lovely home is right on Loch Sheildaig with windows facing nesting eagles and the surrounding mountains. Each day consisted of a peaceful rhythm of morning meditation before breakfast, group Alexander lessons, lunch, walking Alexander lessons as we hiked beautiful trails, free time to relax and/or explore the area and individual lessons. The days culminated in delicious family style dinners enjoyed while watching the sun set over the water.
At this retreat, I learned so much about Alexander Technique and how many of my life long patterns have put undo stress on my body. As a teacher, Duncan was attentive to each student's needs and personal goals including long distance hiking, running, bicycling, pain management, walking and enhanced sense of well being. He teaches in a way that is easy to understand and incorporate into daily life.
I enthusiastically recommend this retreat for a unique travel experience. Duncan is a caring and knowledgeable teacher and delightful host. (Susan Evans, participant)
